Caballos y Ciencias

The excitement of the day started off around 11pm last night when an unexpected visitor briskly entered our dorm. Thinking it was a normal spider, we followed protocol with a sandal in one hand and bug spray in another. Upon contact, the spider released a military fleet of hundreds of baby spiders in the middle of our floor. After shrieking a bit, we took care of the situation with another sandal and more bug spray. It is safe to say a majority of them are dead, but there is likely a rogue lizard somewhere in the room.

At breakfast this morning we had frijoles y arroz (beans and rice), huevos (eggs), and tortillas con queso (tortillas with cheese). There was also fresh fruit and toast with cacao nibs. After breakfast, the group played card games until we departed for horseback riding in the mountains. The weather was beautiful all day long, it was our first whole day with blue skies. The majority of us were first-time riders and everyone survived and thrived. The views were gorgeous and the experience was one that we will never forget.

After horseback riding, it was back to science. We worked on our experiments for 3 hours before leaving for a cooking class in the village. We learned how to cook torillas, salad, and a carribean stirfry dish. John and I (Emma) took lime and salt shots (no alcohol, don't worry ;) and everyone made friends with the owners of the business and their son. The food was amazing and we had a traditional Costa Rican cookie for dessert. It was easily one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. After our phenomenal dinner, we went back to the farm and worked on our experiment for another hour. And here we are now, writing this. It was a great day in Costa Rica and hopefully was in the USA too :).
